Too good to be true…

The 1926 motif by F. Seher shows a strong, expressive female figure in a sophisticated visual language. The illustration combines cheeky irony with the provocative zeitgeist of Reigen – an expressive example of the self-confident visual world of the 1920s. Image quote: “Too good to be true…”

Reigen – Sheets for gallant art and dance – fought for the recognition of eroticism as a cultural factor. The magazine was confiscated in some German cities in the 1920s. Here is an original excerpt from the 1920 Reigen booklet: “Also in the future, the magazine will cultivate in word and image, in verse and prose, that art which is the amiable expression of a cheerful and unbiased gallantry. Even in our serious time, the erotic has not lost its cultural significance, even if it sometimes seems as if its flowering lies in past epochs. Perhaps the significance of the inner joy of life rooted in the erotic has even increased in a time that is not too rich in external joys.”
